Healing Trauma Through EMDR Therapy in Boise, ID
Do you suffer from severe anxiety due to unresolved PTSD, and no matter how hard you try to heal, progress evades you? Have your relationships with others started to suffer because the trauma won’t leave you alone? Are you plagued by nightmares and flashbacks?
It may be time to try something new. At the Boise Counseling Center, one of the primary therapies we use for clients with trauma is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). This evidence-based PTSD treatment has proven to be effective for many in the Boise, Idaho, region, and we’re confident that EMDR therapy can help you, too.
What Is EMDR Therapy, and How Does It Work?
Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 80s, EMDR therapy helps people process and integrate traumatic experiences in a way that reduces the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The process involves eight phases:
- Taking History and Treatment Planning – Gathering background information.
- Preparation – Teaching the client about EMDR and ensuring they have the necessary coping mechanisms and regulation skills to handle treatment.
- Assessment – Identifying traumatic memories to target during EMDR sessions.
- Desensitization – Using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, taps, or sounds) to reduce the emotional impact of traumatic memories.
- Installation – Introducing positive beliefs to replace negative ones.
- Body Scan – Checking for residual tension.
- Debriefing – Returning the client to a state of equilibrium.
- Reevaluation – Assessing the client’s experience and determining the need for further sessions or revising the treatment plan.
EMDR is versatile and can treat trauma stemming from childhood abuse, sexual assault, accidents and injuries, military combat, grief/loss, and more. Many clients experience significant improvements in a relatively short period.
